Akoma features some of the past century’s most revered artists. ‘Borealis’ twitches and pulsates like a boa slithering through contorted sounds, with thousandfold beat switches in constant flux chopping up flutes and vocals from Björk.
could you describe it a bit ? we could say it is similar to which track or which remix ?Listened to the album yesterday and it's nuts. This track is great in particular, I think a lot of you won't be expecting how it'll sound
does she sing? or is it just sample her voice?Listened to the album yesterday and it's nuts. This track is great in particular, I think a lot of you won't be expecting how it'll sound
how could you already listen to it?Listened to the album yesterday and it's nuts. This track is great in particular, I think a lot of you won't be expecting how it'll sound
No spoilers, please
spoilers for some, miniature american flags for others.Spoilers please
paradinas' label, planet mu, is releasing the record. i suspect the cassette mix tape will be this bleep mix paradinas created in 2017:btw, bleep has a combo of 2×LP Gold vinyl + WAV / FLAC download + a Jlin Mix For Bleep by Mike Paradinas, aka µ-Ziq (remixer of hunter) in a Cassette tape. Limited to 100.
Just to be clear, this isn't an "official press release" but rather my own writing and interpretation of the album for Bleep as a product description. The actual PR (the one I received before announce) you can find on the Bandcamp descriptioneverything on this topic is public information from the official press release of the album. go figure out what a song that "twitches and pulsates like a boa slithering through contorted sounds" actually means...

I searched for possible meanings of the word "akoma" and found two definitions. One was the "Malagasy ground boa", which I don't think Jlin was referring to but the track definitely does slither
i thought that was ακόμα (transliteration akoma) from greek like 'yet'.

Yup that's the one. Pretty sure Björk is on flute and vocals which have all been chopped up, the credits just say they both wrote and producedI think "borealis" starts around 5:00? (is hard to tell because the previous track is also unreleased), but there we can hear some samples, maybe that's björk? sounds mental btw
5 more weeks of hopekeep in mind this mix by mike paradinas was uploaded months ago, so most likely Bjork's vocals aren't here (withheld for the final release). and either way, we're only hearing 2 minutes of the track, so this isn't what we'll hear in the final album
Spoilers spoilers, but no, that is pretty much how the song sounds. There's some dialogue samples but other than that no more by way of vocals. I don't think it's a sample of existing songs, I think Björk performed it for this occasion, but I don't actually knowKeep in mind this mix by mike paradinas was uploaded months ago, so most likely Bjork's vocals aren't here (withheld for the final release). and either way, we're only hearing 2 minutes of the track, so this isn't what we'll hear in the final album
that's dissapointing. but thanks for the heads up. got some preorders to cancelSpoilers spoilers, but no, that is pretty much how the song sounds. Either way I would highly recommend listening to the whole album, it's a really incredible update on Jlin's sound and cements her as a composer as well as producer
"borealis" is a perfect way in, the beat swerving between dub and a weird kind of afrobeat-in-negative, tiny eruptive shards of björk's guest vocal scattered through the low end heaviness.
I actually felt this way listening to Black Origami when it came out, felt like it was a bit plain and wrote it off. Then she released Embryo in 2021 which was nuts so I went back to it and realised how good it was. I can see how someone might find her music a bit samey if you're not used to it thoughI listened to half of the album yesterday and I was underwhelmed. so much so that I realised at some point that i wasn't paying any attention and just doomscrolling.
i'll give it another go, maybe i was not in the right mood, but i can't say that so far it has caught my attention.
i think it's also just a bit of a latest trend helped by streaming services and the like. i have noticed that there's more and more newer artists that have tracks "feat" 12 other artists. I guess back in the day when you had to fit all the people involved in the mtv superimposed text you'd just cut it short. Now you have the space and possibility to reach more people, so why not.Meh.
when 'náttúra' was released as a "feat. thom yorke" you can actually hear it's his wails and yelps in the background. So I could forgive that for being a bit of a cheeky marketing. But If they didn't shamelessly milk that 'Borealis' was a "feat. Björk", you'd never know she was even part of it.
The track is... OK... on it's own merits. But There's just something too incoherent yet still formulaic about Jlin's sound that I just can't get on board with generally. But this is Massively misleading marketing and disappointing to say the least.
