Triumph of a heart versions

Postby onepointedstar » Mon Jun 17, 2024 7:21 am

Greetings gentle people. i have a question for the bjork experts here:
what versions of 'triumph of a heart' exist? and is there online audio for me to listen to?

I'll tell you for why, so this doesn't seem like too weird a request. i have a version that was emailed to me mid-august, 2004 that doesn't match any version that i can find in a google search. maybe there's a version that is less well known and i was hoping to be able to compare with this version that i have.

many thanks in advance!

Are you thinking of the matmos thing where there only The only lyric is "the pain of a heart" repeated over and over?

It was on the :album8: leak in summer of 2004, but never released in any way.

Thanks for the reply. I don't know that version, but it doesn't sound like it. the version i have has full lyrics. it's 5:49 long, not the audition mix, album mix or an edit of it, nor is it a live version. if it helps, it was sent to me by mark bell who would often send me random things by email or post. everything he ever sent me has eventually been commercially released except (as far as I can tell) this track.

Would you be willing to share this version? :hyper:

Yes, the length doesn't match anything ever released or leaked.

Here is the one I meant:

It's definitely not that.

in principle I don't mind sharing it, although i don't want to run afoul of any rules or copyright laws.

once I'd bought the album and heard that it wasn't the version on that my assumption had always been that it was mark's remix and would come out on a single at some point, but Bjork kind of fell off my radar a little bit (suddenly couldn't afford to buy literally everything i wanted!) so i didn't know if it had or not.

if it's an unreleased mix, early mix, or remix, then maybe it's unreleased for a reason - i wouldn't want to upset Bjork, or whoever owns the copyright to it, by making it public. although mark didn't specify any prohibitions when he sent it to me - as far as i recall he didn't even write a message body except for a download link, and the file was called 'track' or 'file' or something nondescript like that. I didn't even know the name of it until the album came out :)

anyway maybe I'll give it a bit of time in case someone official wants to voice an opinion. it's been 20 years now so maybe it's not so important, and it'd be a shame if i was the only one who could hear it.

:dizzy:

your hesitatation in sharing it is really appreciable, but knowing how björk approaches her archives it could also be that this mark bell remix is lost media to her and her label too, so giving it air to breathe after 20 years could be a cute tribute to Mark bell

just curious here, were you friends? collaborators? I'm still in mourning over his passing after 10 years, he was definitely her best collaborator/co-producer :aifol:

Not a collaborator, and I wouldn't be so forward as to assume friendship, but we just chatted by email and occasionally he'd send random stuff, out of the blue. Is it 10 years already? Still seems like a shock.

Exactly the rule I was thinking of. Makes it pretty clear cut.

It's definitely not that.
can you tell us a bit more about the sound of this version? is it similar to the album version or more like a remix?

Any new lyrics compared to the final release?

is the medúlla leak so substantially different from the actual thing? I mean, if that is what was supposed to be on it instead of triumph of a heart, I am happy we got the real thing eventually!

I've got an excerpt of a toah promo version, but how could this be compared to onepointedstar's version if we may not share it here?!?

i mean, is an officially unreleased version of a song copyrighted at all? could this be compared to a live version???? please clarify...

The lyrics seem to be pretty much the same, maybe there are lines in the album version not in this I haven't listened back to back. It's not a million miles from the album version, but not close enough that it might be a early edit of that version. It's definitely a different version. A remix, not a mix. Although I can't say whether or not it's an earlier version intended for the album and then replaced.

Earlier today I watched a "making of" video on YouTube and judging by the sounds that are being recorded in that which appear in the album version, but not in this, I'd say it's more likely a remix Mark did either for himself for fun, or for a possible single release.

It's more stripped back, starting with the mouth-brass solo, some mouthy-pops (not hi-hat types like in the album version), then after about 40 seconds the farty "bassline" comes in and then the vocal. There's no "jaws harp"-type meowing or that other rhythmic meowing going on. It stops on a beat; no fade.

the leak did include the TOAH album version, this was a bonus track, I think.

the ensemble remix ?

Where would I be able to hear this? It seems unlikely that Mark would send me someone else's work without comment, and the remix I have sounds like Mark's work and doesn't sound like Ensemble. Plus, he never sent me anything else that wasn't either his work alone or primarily his work in collaboration with others.

there isn't an ensemble remix of TOAH. the only officially released TOAH remix is the audition mix, and it doesn't sound like the version onepointedstar described

i don't use the 4um much these days but onepointedstar please feel free to email me at

if we don't hear then we can't tell 8)

maybe it is an alternate take without or with less dokaka? if i remember right, he joined a bit late during the making of :album8: it wasn't until björk found online an mp3 of his acapella cover version of nirvanas' Smells Like Teen Spirit that he came on board and sort of took over the song.

I Would love to chat a bit more about mark bell

There really isn't much to tell. I wouldn't want to give the wrong impression and folks think that we were best buddies in constant chat. It was just irregular emails over the course of a few years, sometimes with random gifts attached or linked. Sometimes he'd send records in the post. A couple of times unwanted (by him) mixing equipment. i was a bit mystified why he talked to some random nobody, let alone sent stuff. I guess he was just that sort of guy. Just kind and generous.

I think - and my ailing failing memory might be playing tricks on me here - that it all started when he messaged me on another forum because I (think) I mentioned that I'd got loads of gmail invites and could he please have one cos he kept losing his accounts. (Remember those days, when gmail accounts were invite-only and *the* thing everyone wanted?) He wasn't lying - I ended up gifting him more than one gmail account

As for this remix, I'm going to conclude that it's not an ensemble remix since one doesn't exist, except maybe for where that one poster said he had a copy and then, mysteriously, didn't say it any more.

maybe it is an alternate take without or with less dokaka?

If I understand the meaning of 'dokaka' then there's loads of it in this remix. unless it means... er... something else, in which case, maybe, but I like it. :P

is an officially unreleased version of a song copyrighted at all?

As far as my limited understanding of these matters goes, the copyright would most likely be held with Mark himself (if unreleased) - or at least whoever controls his estate. I suppose it's possible that there was a contract clause that specified that any works derived from the recordings would be copyright whoever held the copyright for the recordings, or the label, but I don't think that's how these things typically get done. But, as I said, I don't really know much about these sort of things.

dokaka is the guy who makes the weird/cat noises in the official version of toah... not exactly sure what you were thinking...

i could send you the sample of the promo version and you could compare the 2...

i would still like to chat privately. i’m still very curious about this mark bell version. I have some unreleased material i’m sure would interest you i’m but since we’re dealing with material of questionable origin it may be best to talk privately.
