Birthday congratz thread!!!

Postby mansilen » Tue Aug 23, 2011 2:04 pm

The number 17 is frequently used throughout biophilia, in at least three songs. doesn't sound that much but it's extremely rare to come across that number in pop/rock or even in björks music catalogue. the songs that have something to do with the number 17 is:

moon
the harp notes counts to 17, thus making the time signature to 17/8. something that dr. nibben also explains in her essay on the song.

:duck: a connection, thanks mandrake!
the element selenium (from greek 'selene' for 'moon'!) has atomic number 34 (2x17) and was discovered by berzelius in 1817 (1+8+1+7 = 17) :duck:

crystalline
in the verses, the gameleste loop is 17 notes. for example the first verse. i noticed it by counting to 17 before it looped, but dr. nibben also mentions it in the essay:
just as crystalline structures are based on regular repeating lower-order structures "polygons", "octagons") so the grouping of the 17 notes is broken into repetitions of smaller units.
:duck: another one, yet again thanks to mandrake:
there are exactly 17 wallpaper groups (or plane symmetry groups or plane crystallographic groups) that can describe the symmetries in two dimensions.[/quote] :duck:

hollow
extract from dr. nibbens essay:
the main musical idea is the organ is a sequence of 17 chords, which you can see notated as 17/8 in the musical score, which means there are 17 quavers (eighth-notes) in every bar.
Kinda interesting, huh? why 17? let's make conspiracy theories!

17 is the shinning star & young forever : a naked woman gives eternal life on earth, from 2 vases : 1 golden + 1 silver.

maybe it'll be one of those albums where you can rewind the first track and a secret track appears? about stars.. i mean, if the star is before the moon it has to be this way.

This makes me wonder - abit off topic. But so many artists are accused of using/having sublimonal messages , but I haven't come across any with bjork... Are there any at all D;

The number 17 in numerology and elsewhere.

My favorite connection (as a chemist): the element selenium (from greek 'selene' for 'moon'!) has atomic number 34 (2x17) and was discovered by Berzelius in 1817 (1+8+1+7 = 17)

Well, symmetry groups simply describe mathematically, how an image can be mirrored, rotated and translated (shifted up/down and left/rigth) so a repetitive pattern emerges. In a two-dimensional space (hence "wallpaper") only 17 distinct symmetry operations are possible.
