So...

What do you think? :blackduck:

We're still working on fixing things and fine tuning this place.
But we wanted it to go live asap.

You are welcome to voice your opinion and point out dead ends.
Thanks.

It's weird, cuz I was used to the old one.
At first I didn't know where all the different topics were, but now I can see how they're listed.
It still will take a few days to figure everything out and get used to it... but I hope it'll be better than the old forum.

I love it. The design's really clean and tasteful, it was worth waiting a month. I guess I'll still need some time to get used to some things (like the avatars being on the right). I also think it wouldn't hurt to separate individual posts with a thin grey line (like the one that's underneath the POST A REPLY header when you, well, post a reply), because I sometimes get confused where one ends and another begins.

But apart from that, I think it's all lovely. It's good to be back.

Re: So...

Postby Magnetar » Thu Jun 28, 2012 3:28 pm

there'll be an option to switch "back" to the black design soon
for those who feel nostalgic
but since there were so many who were unhappy with the all black version
we thought we'd launch it with the new white layout
personally, i find much more soothing for the eyes
don't you?
Thank Sagan for that! :D

Honestly, yes, it took some time to get used to the black, but it fitted so nicely with the "biophilia Universe" on the frontpage and the app, the album cover etc. I really liked it eventually. Also because for instance in the Biophilia Picture Show thread there are lots of pics of the universe and those stars, nebulae, galaxies etc blended in so beautifully in that black background. Now it looks really messy. I tried to switch back to black in Chrome last night, but the textblocks stayed white. So I'm very happy with this news. Thank you. :)

Some Fist Impressions...

Dislikes

- I already really miss the "View Last Posts" button on the main index page of the 4um.

- I don't like the "!" "Quote" and "PM" "MSN" etc. buttons, they look cheap, but maybe when I can switch to black again they will look better (blending in, only seeing the white text).

- I don't like that there are no fine lines between posts, I don't know why but it's harder for me now to separate posts than with the old black layout.

Likes

- I love that we have subforums now for each album.

- I love that we can use capital letters again.

- I love that we have more font colors for posts.

- I like that you can edit your profile more and easier.

- I love that when you quote someone their text appears in a slightly grey box. It makes "who writes what" much clearer than before.

- I like that you can upload attachments to your posts now, though... I noticed attaching an MP4 file to a post is not allowed. So I just tried a 22,5 Mb avi video and it didn't appear in my post. So how do you embed homemade video's/youtube videos in your post? And what is the max Mb limit?

- I have to get used to the avatars being on the right. Felt a bit like I have to write lefthanded as a right handed person haha, but I'll get used to it. What's good about it is that the texts under the avatars is centred to the left so it's alligned nicely next to the post, know what I mean? Looks cleaner.

- And in the email I received about the 4um being back online it mentioned there would be new smilies, but they are the same. Will we get newer ones in the future?

- Also sometimes you can edit your post, but when you get back to it later and want to edit it again you can only remove it or quote it. What's going on there?

There isn't a button that sends you back to the subforum from a thread (only the 'back' button in the browser). Can you fix it? :squid:

Re: So...

Plus, the black and white 'globes' near the thread/subforum name confuse me. They don't always change colour after I read them.

Aaand, I couldn't edit my previous post because the EDIT button was suspiciously gone, hence the double post.

The Good

- looks good, well except some buttons, that Magnetar mentioned, but that's not really an issue in the short run
- feels better, the upgrade will probably benefit us in the long run in many ways
- I like the extra sections, not it feels fuller

The Exceptionally Good

- finally a moron filter! If you add people to your Foe list, you can automatically skip their posts. Most new forums have this, it's a pleasure to see it here.

The Bad

- not fully functional: no edit button (Edit: It seems to be working now), no proper POTD
- no automatic pic resize (big images are just cut off)
- no video?! 2012 and no video... Every fan forum made in 5 minutes has options to embed YouTube, DailyMotion, Google Video etc. Just not this one.

The Incredibly Bad

- More than 5 weeks of downtime?! Nothing can make me feel it was worth it. Seriously, unless everything had to be written down on paper and then typed again, this downtime was insane! Mark Zuckerberg singlehandedly coded Facebook in less than 5 weeks :|
- Password reset on Yahoo! emails doesn't work. The emails just don't arrive. That means tons of people are still locked out if all the passwords had to be reset.
- New accounts now require waiting for moderator approval? Tried to make a new account with a Gmail address, still waiting for confirmation...

The combination of all of the above (the incredibly bad) means less people in the 4um, more frustration amongst fans.

In other words, I need more page configuration options (color, positioning of the icons etc.)

New 4um feels snappier, despite having more features.

I think I'm with you on the black. Plus I'm totally confused on how to navigate the 4um. Hitting the back button to find the next thread with new replies in any topic is getting tiresome. Maybe I'm just too old for change. Very happy that the 4um is back, though.

I like it except I find it hard to see where one post starts and another finishes because there's no obvious breaks... makes it slightly less easy to read.

I guess I'll get used to the user information being on the right instead of the left.

Also, I can't see an easy way to go back to the forum, other than clicking the "forum" logo at the top.

If my memory is working, I am sure there was a link at the top of each post which took you back to the forum the post was in?

Oh, and by the way, if signatures are now allowed please, please, please (if you can) remove the facility to have images in the signature, otherwise we'll get signatures with animated gifs like this:

I think the text that are links should be in bold. Like the nicknames, the top links, etc, a way to differentiate from regular text and links!! that's important imo.

It seems to only find new posts made after the forum reopened. It doesn't seem to find historic ones prior to that.

It took me a while, but black circles mean read (or no new posts) and white means unread or new posts.

It's kind of confusing, I don't know if anyone else agrees?

The white kind if looks like it's marked as read, and vice versa...

Does nobody miss "Posts since last visited"? Note, that this is different from POTD. In the old 4um, it was visible (only) on the index page.

Also, configurability of the "user info box" is not just gimmickry. On a smartphone, I really have to scroll to see the user, whereas in the former 4um I could (most of the times) see both text and user info at once. Make that left to right again, please (or adjustable).
