it's been 10 days since i came back from nyc, and i think i'm now finally able to speak.
i attended the may 16th concert.
there's no way to describe the experience as vividly. photos, videos, absolutely nothing does it justice. you think you have an idea, but you really, really don't. i've seen a lot of things, a lot of live performances, i've seen the biggest musical acts and huge productions, this was my 4th time seeing bjork, but i've never ever seen anything like this. and probably never will? it is a massive feast for the eyes and ears, and a truly emotional ride. it really feels like you're inside the world she imagined. you can tell that this was her ultimate vision for utopia, and not the european tour she interrupted. i saw it in london at all points east, and it was absolutely beautiful and fun, but it now looks like a school play compared to cornucopia, as much as it hurts me to say this.
the setup is monstrous. i guess it's very important to say that i was in the very last (i do mean last) row, and i felt totally immersed and didn't feel like i missed on anything. and it's so amazing what she's done - even if you get the cheapest tickets, you're in for one of the greatest live musical experiences of your life. don't even worry for a second if you're planning to go and don't have the money to spend on the "best" seats. i thought we wouldn't get the whole experience there, but yes, the 360 sound and lights (wonderfully designed and totally surprising btw - purple lights flashing on the audience during the gate, in sync with the music, got me all giddy) were all around, even in the back - plus you get the whole vision of everything. you won't miss anything at all, unless you want to seat meters away from her and see her facial expressions. but she wears a mask anyway.
the beginning with the family outro is more thrilling than you can imagine, super colorful, bright and sharp, perfect sound (at least from where i was seating). and when the curtains start to open, from the gate onwards, they become a super widescreen projection surface. it went from side to side of the shed. the quality of the projections is absurd, and i had so many moments of opening my mouth and eyes in a loud gasp. and i remember that because i don't think i've felt my face doing that same expression in my life more times than i can count on one hand, and i sure can't remember the last time. i looked around and everyone had similar expressions, no joke. and in the end, the no photo/filming policy was the best request ever. i know some people have been recording, but i didn't see anyone with their phones out, and i could see a lot of people - basically everyone from where i was seating - which was truly a magical thing and made the night even more unique.
tobias gremmler's visuals are breathtaking.
blissing me with serpent was super beautiful. from the moment he stepped onstage, they just started acting silly and looked like they were having a lot of fun. she was so supportive, and was clearly thrilled with his talent. manu delago's water percussion was magical.
the choir was amazing (i had the chance to catch their free performance at the shed a couple days later. like maybe 50 people got to see it. the conductor is one special character, and the kids had heavenly and perfect pitch voices. in between songs - all traditional icelandic folk songs, it lasted for more than one hour - they spoke of the sky, love, glaciers and ancient poems, and it was one of the most beautiful and touching things i've ever seen), and their cosmogony rendition was what first got me crying during that night.
body memory was fantastic, and the cannons are bigger and more impressive than they look.
a special mention needs to be given to the claimstaker visuals. what on earth was that?!? one of the incredible moments where i couldn't believe my eyes.
i really wasn't prepared for all of this, and i'm so thrilled that she really is touring this monster, although i'm curious to see if the production will be the same. and if you're not feeling the setlist or are having second thoughts, just go, if you have the chance. or you'll regret if forever, i swear.
i know it's the ultimate cliche, but there's still no one like her, she's the mothership leading the way. what makes it even more important is that this kind of technology is available to everyone. the money isn't, i know, but things like the reverb chamber, the curtains versus screen, the mushroom/island stage design, the aesthetics of the projections, we know it's all about her unique vision and the collaborators', and are not at all impossible things to create, clearly. there are a lot of massive productions out there, with even bigger structures, but she continues to be on point, pushing things forward in the most beautiful and innovative way.
and i have to mention the greta thunberg video. her speech and facial expressions and voice will make you cry. it'll make you think about our future and the life of all kids and their kids and their kids. kudos to bjork for bringing this up and opening this space.
and right after that, when future forever starts, the kids start singing and bjork lights up like an iridescent sea creature, you'll be floored and will start to accept that it will soon be all over and you won't be the same person, ever again.
