Postby Moderator » Fri Jul 11, 2014 8:33 pm

for my 1000st post here, i thought i would challenge you with the ULTIMATE survey.
i dare you to go over björk's entire career and reflect about each different aspect.

now, this is in no way mandatory of course.
you fill out as much as you want - leave blank what you don't feel like.

and when filling it in... don't be shy - tell us why!

MY FAVORITE

album:

 My beloved :album4:  <3

Soooooo many reasons. Firstly, Hunter is my song, it is THE song.

From it's first beats it hit me that this was an important album. A landmark and a change. My  :logo: had grown up and grown up into a strong, focused artist who was 100% fertile and clearly in her element.

The album is heartrendingly beautiful not afraid to stand out, yet remains accessible.

I never thought it would be topped and I am delighted to say that 14 years later it nearly was. I have to mention my :album11: . I love you. I love you with all my heart. If I'm honest both albums are up there. It is just nostalgia mixed with the passion of  :album4: that makes it my no.1

album cover:

:album2: Excting, vibrant, energetic, sexy. The artwork matches the music perfectly and there's tons to spot if you look up close  :)

live cd:

Debut Live: I listen to it more than the studio album. It feels less dated. Crying/VH are great.

live cd:

Not really bothered. Homogenic- I like the dress

live dvd:

ROH. Totally biased, I was there. Regardless of that, It's just lovely. The orchestra is great, Zeena and  :logo:  are a great combo, the dress is super, setlist is great I think the up coming DVD will top it though

live dvd cover:

Can I have the Vessel VHS? I like the surprise on the inside cover :naughty:

tour:

Biophilia

tour setlist:

Volta

tour stage / musicians:

tour makeup / outfit: Biophilia

To sum up: Biophilia was the most ambitious and beautiful tour of the lot. The choir was perfect. Manu and has a lovely drum. The whole experience felt so open and I really appreciated being so close to the action, you really felt part of it, not just spectating.

Nod goes to the Volta tour though for it's variety and sparkles.

live performance:

(song) YBFA: Cambridge. So heartfelt and perfect

live performance:

Too many to say. I may update after some thought.

live performance:

Jools Holland: Post set.

single:

Earth Intruders: the mix is great. It's what a single should be. loud, brash and exciting

single video:

Mutual Core- but it really could be any one of 5

single disc:

Isobel (CD1): 4 great songs. Feels like its own little complete mini album, not just a load of mixes stuck together

single packaging: Hunter. All those little Hunter heads!

song:

Hunter- THE song, I've mentioned already

song livc:

Hunter- you just didn't know me!

remix album:

Telegram

remix album:

(cover + artwork) Bastards

remixed song: AIFOL: Guy Sigsworth. <3 Only this and Mutual Core mix is on my playlist.

b-side:

I Go Humble- This was the song that changed everything!

b-side:

Trance or whatever it's called

cover version:

Gotham Lullaby- No contest

cover version:

No comment- not bothered.

lyric:

If travel is searching and home's what's been found I'm not stopping

Followed by

Thunderstorms come! Scrap those barnacles of me!

Followed by

The pleasure is all mine, to get to me the generous one is the strongest stance

memorabilia:

My cardboard Post 'Björk'. Its a piece of card but do you have one? No. I do :p

era:

Too hard. Homgenic overall. It has some cracking TV performances, the best videos but overall and most importantly my most loved album

Re: the ULTIMATE survey

Postby m.thr.n » Sat Jul 12, 2014 9:55 am

I also skipped some, hope it's okay.

album (based on the songs):
Homogenic. It's her masterpiece.
album (based on cover + artwork):
I think I'll go with Biophilia because its aesthetic is very appealing to me. But Vespertine is a close second.

live cd (based on the songs):
Vespertine Live.
live cd (based on cover + artwork):
Let's face it, they're all fugly.

tour: (overall)
I've only seen her once, and I might be a bit biased, but the Biophilia tour was a proof that there are still unexplored places in live music. There's no other musician who has ever put this kind of a show, so there you go.

live performance: (song)
So many! Thank goodness for YouTube. For today, let's choose the one when she lets loose on Jools Holland during "So Broken".
live performance: (concert)
The one I went to, duh.
live performance: (tv appearance)
"Who Is It" live with Rahzel and Tagaq on Canal+ because of its pure bizzarity.

single: (song)
In terms of commercial potential? "Big Time Sensuality".
single: (video)
Again - so many! Let's go with "Triumph of a Heart" because it's a hilarious classic.
single: (remixes + bsides)
I can't remember which remix/B-side was where, sorry.
single: (cover + artwork)
Maybe "Hidden Place"?

song: (studio version)
"Hyperballad".
song: (live version)
So many but "Generous Palmstroke" is always just transformed live from the meh studio version.

remix album: (based on songs)
Telegram.
remix album: (cover + artwork)
Yeah, Telegram.
remixed song:
"Sun in My Mouth" recomposed by Ensemble.

b-side: (released)
I have a soft spot for "Domestika", "Sod Off" and "I Go Humble".
b-side: (unreleased)
"Trance".
cover version: (by björk)
I like her take on "Gloomy Sunday".
cover version: (of a björk song)
The performances from the Polar Music Prize ceremony come to mind, they were all good.

lyric: (can be a word / phrase / paragraph / complete song text)
I don't go to Björk's music for the lyrics - let's face it, she's not a great lyricist and there are musicians who are way better than her with words - but "Hyperballad" is a perfect short story put into a song.
photo: (official / promotional)
Image

era: (album + tv appearances + photo shoots + etc)
Let's go with Medulla. I know, I know - no tour! - but it made her appearances even more special. Plus it's the first era I experienced as a fan, and she was so effortlessly cool then - releasing an experimental, groundbreaking vocal-only album (which could've been a career-killing move), yet still singing these songs dressed as a bell or dancing with a f*cking cat. Or talking about puffins on TV. And looking dope.

lyric: rescue me from levelheadness (nature is ancient)
OMG I forgot about this song! I love this lyric!

Rescue me from levelheadness
and the unnecessary luxury of being calm!

The Boho Dance… better than Joni Mitchell's original
Labann, we often disagree here... but I don't think I've ever disagreed with you more.

Re: the ULTIMATE survey

Are we not all entitled to an opinion?
Of course we are. I'm not saying your opinion is stupid or invalid, I just disagree with it. My disagreement is therefore a way of voicing my own opinion.
The Boho Dance meant so much more coming from Björk than Joni, who only intended cynical and snarky, not the longings of a struggling single mother who researches music obsessively while changing diapers, laundering clothes, and putting dinner on the table for a gang of ungratefuls.
Honestly, I don't get what it has to do with the song we're talking about.
See past the shaky voice modestly mouthing big foreign vocabulary.
Which actually is one of my main problems with this cover (apart from the lazy arrangement). It sounds as if Björk didn't even understand what she was singing about. As if the loaded with meaning words were just a vessel for her vocals. She sounds like a person who learned the song by ear through listening to it over and over again, and who can mimick the pronunciation, but who doesn't actually speak English and it's just nonsense gibberish to her.

Okay, I shouldn't hijack this thread! Back to the surveys.

2 things:

as for live cds, don't forget that biophilia at mif counts, too.
cover + artwork = the manual.

secondly, no "your opinion is stupid" and/ or "i disagree" please.
as soon as your list does not match 100% someone elses, you automatically disagree.
so let's all just agree to that.

Re: the ULTIMATE survey

Postby mansilen » Sun Jul 13, 2014 2:20 pm

this was so much fun! thanks for a nice thread. here goes..

album: (based on the songs)
hardest. question. ever. i think i'd go with medulla for this one. it's just extremely compelling and complete for me, it triggers my creativity like nothing else.
although, as projects, i'm head over heels for both biophilia and volta. these albums haven't got it, but as a whole they are perfect. for volta, that is the live concert. and for biophilia it's more mystic - it's the concept as a whole, the world she created for it. i love it very deeply.
album: (based on cover + artwork)
homogenic, post and biophilia has the best covers. but vespertine has the best artwork!

live cd: (based on the songs)
vespertine live. some of the vespertine songs are in my opinion even better live; even more dynamic, living, breathing. i love the flow in this concert, my favourites are aurora, undo and harm of will. this is the definition of beauty, really.
live cd: (based on cover + artwork)
love the voltaic symbol and pictures!

live dvd: (based on songs)
voltaic!! i love love love the voltaic dvd. all the songs are so incredible, her and the band's performances are stunning in this one. the filming is a but crappy but that does not affect me one bit :) this is the one!
live dvd: (based on cover + artwork)
who would not answer vespertine live? it set her standard, really. very beautiful indeed.

tour:
biophilia or volta. i didn't see her before 2011, so i'm saying biophilia because the only live experience i have with her. but volta was probably over the top-amazeballs.
tour: (based on setlist)
volta, because she variated herself a LOT. very exciting to follow, and fun to listen to all the songs of which quite many she only performed below 10 times.
tour stage / musicians:
vespertine, volta and biophilia were all perfect in this sense.
tour makeup / outfit:
biophilia! she is my space-god, my gaia-queen. i love when she goes sci-fi.

live performance: (song)
hard one! i have so many. the top three consists of immature from voltaic dvd, cover me from atta raddir, and declare independence from the last zenith show. although this might well change tomorrow..
live performance: (concert)
stockholm music & arts. i was crying so much during :aifol: , and she sang it so beautifully. she really rocked that night.
live performance:
hunter, joga and bachelorette on jools <3

single: (song)
hunter. i just love the fact she released it as a single.
single: (video)
i very much love the crystalline video.
single: (remixes + bsides)
hidden place. perfect.
single: (cover + artwork)
wanderlust

song: (studio version)
this changes all the time, and that is very relieving. today : scatterheart.
song:(live version)
bachelorette - strings version from family tree. this captures the very essence of the song. very cinematic too!

remix album: (based on songs)
telly! remix albums don't get better.
remix album: (cover + artwork)
bastards.
remixed song:
crystalline (omar souleyman). it's so much fun!

b-side: (released)
domestika, scary.
b-side: (unreleased)
t r a n c e
cover version: (by björk)
boho dance
cover version: (of a björk song)
asgerdur juniusdottir's take on isobel.

lyric: (can be a word / phrase / paragraph / complete song text)
to risk all
is the end all
and the beginning all

Album: (based on the songs) Homogenic. Though I rate Vespertine a 10 and this one a 9, this one is my favorite based on songs, and the fact that 4 of my all-time favorites are from this album.
Album: (based on cover + artwork) Biophilia.

Live CD: (based on the songs) The bootleg ‘Live at the Corn Exchange’ is what got me interested, and for that reason Homogenic Live.
Live CD: (based on cover + artwork) Voltaic.

Live DVD: (based on songs) Shepherds Bush Empire. Headphones. Venus As A Boy. Possibly Maybe. <3 And the best live mix of Human Behaviour hands down.
Live DVD: (based on cover + artwork) Vespertine Live at the Royal Opera House.

Tour: (overall) Greatest Hits.
Tour: (based on setlist) Greatest Hits.
Tour stage / Musicians: Greatest Hits. The Icelandic String Octet, Matmos, Zeena Parkins, Leila Arab. It doesn’t get much better than that.
Tour makeup / Outfit: Greatest Hits.

Live performance: (song) Undo, Royal Opera House, Vespertine tour. Something about this song, and this performance, brings me to tears almost every time I watch it.
Live performance: (concert) Volta tour, Fox Theater, Atlanta, GA. Because I was there.
Live performance: (TV appearance) Possibly Maybe on the Jools Holland Show.

Single: (song) All Is Full Of Love.
Single: (video) All Is Full Of Love.
Single: (remixes + B sides) Cocoon
Single: (cover + artwork) Bachelorette

Song: (studio version) Jóga
Song: (live version) The Anchor Song live at Cambridge, December 2, 1998.

Remix album: (based on songs) Telegram.
Remix album: (cover + artwork) Bastards.
Remixed song: Alarm Call (Potage Du Jour)

B-side: (released) It’s In Our Hands.
B-side: (unreleased) Trance.
Cover version: (by Björk) Gloomy Sunday from Stormy Weather (AT&T Promo).
Cover version: (of a Björk song) Very few do I like, these being the exceptions. Venus As A Boy - Zoey Martin. Unravel - Beta State. AIFOL - PS22 Chorus. Jóga - PS22 Chorus. One Day - PS22 Chorus.

Lyric[s]: (can be a word / phrase / paragraph / complete song text) And if you believe in dreams, or what is more important that a dream can come true, I will meet you. / How come out of all the people in the world only one can make me complete. / Destroy all that is keeping you down. / And the beautifullest fireworks are burning in the sky just for you. / Show me forgiveness for having lost faith in myself.

Photo: (official / promotional) Image
Photo shoot: (official / promotional) http://www.bjork.fr/Inez-Vinoodh-Biophilia-photoshoot
Memorabilia: (poster / t-shirt / tour merchandise / book / etc) Unlike some of you, I only have a couple of posters, 2 t-shirts, 1 ticket stub and some books - but my favorite Björk related item is the antique pump organ I own, similar to the one she plays the Anchor Song on from Inside Björk. And the picture my father captured from the documentary, matted and framed above as a center piece. Picture 1 Picture 2 Long story short, A friend took me to Atlanta to see Björk on the Volta tour. That’s a 12 hour drive. We stopped on the way to visit some friends of his who have a house full of antiques including this pump organ. I shared her story of riding her bike to the churches in Iceland and I played them the Anchor Song video from the documentary. A year went by and I received a phone call asking if I would like to own the organ as they were moving and didn’t have room for it where they were moving to. My fandom and story resonated with them and they knew I would give it a good home. A year later I got the picture which completes it. End of story.
The pump organ or harmonium is a type of reed organ that generates sound with foot-pumped bellows. They were widely used in smaller churches and in private homes in the 19th century.

Era: (album + tv appearances + photo shoots + etc) Volta.

Funniest Interview: The Frank Skinner Show, 2001. Part 1. Part 2.

Favorite Mash-up: When Jimi met Björk - Born In A Bad Place.

If you could go through a time portal to any show, which one would it be? Fuji Rock Festival, 2003.

Mod, I hope you don’t mind that I added the last three.

this is not my ticket though; mine is number „00504“.
there is a story, too.

back in 2001 i ordered a series of books from amazon.com that came in a box that was already damaged upon receipt. so i sent it back to amazon asking for a new one. however, i had already started reading one of the books and i had used this ticket as a bookmark. needless to say i was more than saddened by my own actions. so i contacted amazon about it and asked them if there was any way they could find the set of books that i had just returned and look for the ticket. i had no high hopes in all honesty.
three days later i received a letter from amazon with my priced ticket, wishing me all the best and hoping i would enjoy the concert. since that day i put my wholehearted trust in amazon.com and praise them for their customer service.

era: biophilia :album11: for personal reasons. ( :album6: get’s an honorary mention though. that was a magical period. and a great time to be a björk fan.)

there. :cosmogony:

This is exactly the problem with way forum works. People only check the POTD, but when nobody posts to a thread and you close your visit, thread vanishes when next you visit. So you have to bump a thread continually to get attention.
True, maybe this issue will be solved with the next 4um release.

not 100% sure, but as the moderator of this forum is very keen on receiving answers to this thread, I assume, that this info will be used for the Björk retrospective at the MoMA New York... :naughty:

dear moderator: if you let people here know what the info they (should) provide is used for, I think the responce-rate would be much higher... 8) 8) 8)
