'The Johnsons' were never a specific group of musicians. Sure there were early members, like Julia Kent and Rob Moose, but Antony has also performed with 'The Johnsons' being various orchestras and even a highly skilled jazz band. The current Johnsons are OPN and Hudson Mohawke… but the're not being named the Johnsons anymore. Antony did not change his band name into Anohni, she has changed her name to Anhoni and is performing under her new name.
Earlier in the announcements I thought Anohni was her, OPN, and HudMo, probably because of the thread name lol

I think a lot of people (including me!) intended her new name as a "new project" instead of her identity.
Anyway Anohni always wrote, composed and arranged her own music, the Johnsons were a great group of people who delivered her vision, but it was her first and foremost.
Anohni made a live debut of HOPELESSNESS last night in NYC, backed by a band featuring Daniel Lopatin (0PN). The setlist was:
01 Hopelessness
02 4 Degrees
03 Watch Me
04 Paradise
05 Execution
06 Ricochet
07 I Don't Love You Anymore
08 Obama
09 Violent Men
10 Why Did You Separate Me From the Earth?
11 Jesus Will Kill You
12 Crisis
13 Indian Girls
14 Marrow
15 In My Dreams
16 Drone Bomb Me
So no Antony and the Johnsons material, the whole new album + 5 unreleased tracks. Since they handed out tour programmes with lyrics printed out in that very same order, I think this is going to be the setlist for the whole tour.
Anohni wore a hooded cloak that obscured her face while videos of various women lip-syncing to the songs were projected behind her (including Naomi Campbell for "Drone Bomb Me").

Is she now completely identified as a woman? As far as I knew, she was more androgyny. When did she express that?
She has identified as transgender since childhood but “cowardice and shame” prevented her from asking people to call her “she”. “‘She’ used to make my skin crawl,” she says now. “Within a gay context it can be used very snidely: to contain trans people and to denigrate other men. But working and socialising with women, and doing [campaign group] Future Feminism, empowered me in the feminine, and I could accept that it was OK to be the way I am. But I don’t feel emphatically female, it’s more subtle than that.”
I saw her live in Berlin two weeks ago - I enjoyed the show but I have to say It wasn't my favorite concert. it's hard to explain, but the atmosphere felt quit cold . especially I had a problem with her "performance art approach" - she lay down on the floor or walked away from the stage and it always felt quit disconnect to the audience. the videos of the women singing were also a bit "much" very theatrical.
of course I love her voice and she sang great but I didn't get the "don't interact at all with audience" not even say "hi" or "goodbye" .
also the context of the record feels very American, so maybe it was a bit more disconnected in Berlin ???
I went to a Hopelessness performance in the Netherlands and loved it! Indeed, she does not make any contact with the audience apart from singing all those angry songs perfectly. The live performance of Obama was just stunning.
^ According to a BBC Radio 1 interview with Annie Mac ANOHNI will release an EP with the rest of the songs from the HOPELESSNESS tour 'early next year'. So it seems we might get "Paradise," "Richochet," "Jesus Will Kill You," "Indian Girls," and "In My Dreams" quite soon!

Does anoyone know what happened to anohni's facebook page? she used to have a facebook page but i can't find it anymore and the link to facebook from her site doesn't work anymore. the link to instagram doesn't work as well
weird...
They were both removed a few days ago. IIRC she posted an apology on Instagram for 'the worst vocal performance of her career' during some gig in NYC (people in the comments said she sounded fine, though) and said she needs a break. Then one more post on FB about changing approach and trying a 'stealth tactic' in 2017 (in the context of fighting climate change), and then the accounts were gone. Her Twitter @rebismusic is still up, though.
On a very special episode of Allegedly we are joined by ANOHNI who's album Hopelessness was released last year to critical acclaim. We speak about the essence of trans identity from bridging the gap to womanhood, to the desexualization of the trans artist, the sexual & emotional traumas trans women often face and the untamable spirit of the trans child. She also shares how performing under a veil liberated her, clarify's her Oscar nomination drama and teaches us how to not let politics colonize our hearts.
ANOHNI: PARADISE out March 17th via Rough Trade and Secretly Canadian.

"Our new leaders hope to crush our spirits and expedite ecocide in the name of virulent progress, consumerism and false security.
Like Jihadis, many capitalists and Christians compulsively seek to facilitate a righteous "holy war", or apocalypse.
For millennia, Men have enslaved women and attempted to appropriate female creative power, re-casting themselves as gods and creators.
This assault continues today in the forms of ruthless wealth and mineral extraction, genetic engineering, mass surveillance and war mongering.
But as Donald Trump and his cabinet now demonstrate, the skills encouraged in men by their biologies and the tools that boys master in the playground have not equipped them to deal with the unprecedented global crisis we are now facing.
Mothers, your sons are trapped in a nightmare; they are not capable of responsibly negotiating the destructive agency that they now wield.
More profound even than a crime against humanity, fathers and sons now compulsively prepare to commit ecocide, in a final and irreversible assault upon creation itself.
Only an intervention by women around the world, with their innate knowledge of interdependency, deep listening, empathy and self-sacrifice, could possibly alter our species' desperate course."
"My EP PARADISE is released on Friday 17th. There are 7 songs on PARADISE. You will find 6 of them on the release. The final piece of the puzzle is the song I held back. It is called I NEVER STOPPED LOVING YOU.
If you have listened to my music over the years, you know that I have publicly given something of my heart.
If you would like the final song from PARADISE, email me at anohni@rebismusic.com and share with me in a sentence or two what you care most about, or your hopes for the future. Send this to me instead of the dollar you used to send me in the olden days. The price for this song is a gesture of anonymous vulnerability. That may be too expensive for some of you, and that's okay.
I want to hear your collective mind. I want to see that river of thoughts. Please don't write about how my music affects you; if you mention me or my work I will not send the track. Please keep the focus on yourself. Take a risk and break out of established ways of doing and perceiving. It is what you have expected of me as an artist, and just for a moment, it is what I ask of you.
I will respond in kind, by sending you my final song from this series, one which represents some of my better thinking. Please listen to it within the album sequence as the 7th song of PARADISE.
It's not as strong as Hopelessness, definitely, but it's growing on me a lot. I get really strong visuals for "She Doesn't Mourn Her Loss", like leaving the planet in a rocket/spaceship and watching a desolate Earth slowly disappear from view outside the window.
I sent an email to her today as well, hope I'm not too late
I just received a reply
in the actual emai "here" is a link which will lead to the download
Hi there.
I am reading all these thousands of emails. The themes that keep recurring are love for family, for partners and children, for the earth, for animals and for the environment. There are struggles voiced by people who fear for their safety in volatile environments. Some are suffering from anxiety and depression in the face of what is happening globally. Some express guilt or confusion at wanting to try to care for themselves. Others tell me of their anger in the face of the Western colonialism pervading their countries and communities. A lot of people are hoping to help create a better world. So many of these aspirations involve serving nature and the community. There are so many beautiful, simple truths being expressed.
I have heard from teachers, activists, lawyers, students, artists, and from people in transition, unemployed, wandering, or retired. I want to thank you all, collectively, for adding your voice to this little wave that reached my shores. Its amazing to receive thousands of emails and so many of them are saying similar things.
Here is my song I NEVER STOPPED LOVING YOU. I think about the Earth and Her persistence, how tirelessly She provides for us. Her generosity is the root of our lives.
Download I Never Stopped Loving You Here
I ask that you please do not post this song anywhere online or share this link with others. If people want to hear it, just tell them to send me an email and I will send it to them. Lets leave the door open for this process for others. Thank you for this.
For those who are interested in Anohni's visual art work… Koenig Books London just published a 496 page book about Anohni's 2006 'My Truth' exhibition at the Kunsthalle Bielefeld. I went there last year, excellent exhibition. First time most works were ever shown to an audience and now the first time they've been published in a book.
This catalogue presents collages and works on paper from the past fifteen years by Anohni.
Born in 1971, Anohni is the singer for the renowned New York-based avant-garde group, Antony and the Johnsons.
Besides Anohni, this catalogue also features selected pieces by James Elaine, Peter Hujar, and Kazuo Ohno, which were important reference points and influences for her.
The accompanying texts detail these multiple connections and provide profound insight into the thoughts and ideas of an exceptional artist.
i really enjoy the new single, i wonder if the whole album will feature this soulful sound or it is more of an outlier (à la “fistful of love”, “aeon”, or “thank you for your love” on the previous records with the johnsons)

ANOHNI: [...] But before Boy George, I was really into Kate Bush. No doubt, she was my first singer.
BJÖRK: Mother. [Laughs]
ANOHNI: I mean, The Kick Inside was the first record I ever bought when I was seven years old in Amsterdam. I used to perform that record and I used to do the slow motion cartwheel for all the children in the neighborhood. Because she had shot the video for “Wuthering Heights” in Amsterdam, and I was living in Holland the year that it came out. And that was the first seven-inch single I ever bought.
