I think it was Family, honestly I didn't listen to the album but a few times because I wanted to hear live versions fresh. It had long expansive atmospheric sounds and then a furious pizzicato string part.

It was a good show, better energy actually than Wednesday night I think. She was drinking more wine too! Well, it was weird though that she said near the end how all these shows have been so very different from each other. At least, the two I was at had identical set lists!

A lovely show--and my first time seeing her live, which made it all the more special.

Black Lake in its live form is infinitely more powerful than the recorded version. It become very apparent to me that, even several concerts later, she is truly using the Vulnicura Tour as a tool for healing.

There were moments of Family and Black Lake that were very difficult to watch her perform, but all in all, I think that is the aim of this album and the tour--the sharing of something so deeply private in a hugely public setting.

A few notes:

-Great vocal improvisation at the end of Lionsong. She is definitely starting to develop these songs musically, incorporating some more ad-libbing, flourishes, and melodic changes.

-There were a handful of lyrical discrepancies throughout the show ("...That makes me sense your pain" instead of "that makes me feel your pain" in Stonemilker, etc.) but nothing major. She did sing "one feeling at a time" and not "one woman at a time" in Lionsong.

-History of Touches was a bit disorganized. As we are used to, she performs quite behind the beat in many of her live shows, but for HoT--especially with the animated visuals that were projecting where her vocals should have been--her timing got a little jumbled each time she tried to match up with the prompter.
That being said, I think the Vulnicura songs are supposed to be more free-form, aleatoric, and generative by nature. Had I not known the album version, those moments in HoT--and another instance in Family, I think--I wouldn't have thought them to be "mistakes."

-Her dance moves and gestures were absolutely fantastic. Seeing her dance and move brought me to realize a crucial part of the Vulnicura healing process: the effort to reclaim her own body. Often when one is in a long-term, committed, loving and sexual relationship, the sense of ownership and identification of one's own body can become merged with the partner's. Her dance moves were much more sexual, elaborate, and emotive than I have ever seen from her, even back in the Sugarcubes era.

A few times she reached towards her genital area, other times she caressed her womb. Her stroking of the mic and its cable became very sexualized in a few instances. She is definitely using movement in a new way, perhaps as a mechanism to reposition her voice and her body as a singular identity. Reclaiming what had become attached to Matthew, both symbolically and physically.

-All Neon Like, reworked by Arca, was energetic and very powerful. She did some great ad-libbing, and it was so invigorating to experience the new beats and melodies that were introduced in this version.

-Wanderlust was the closer; she invited everyone to stand and dance. I was in the 2nd row, and people around me were dancing, but it seemed like the crowd was pretty shy, movement wise. (There were two older hispanic women, a mother and daughter, who were sitting behind me. The mother must be at least 75 years old, but she was rocking out!!

) Her voice was fantastic on Wanderlust: precise and strong.

-Venue: New York City Center. Smaller than I had imagined! The sound was a little bit bass-heavy because of the acoustics of the space. But the deep bass was a lot of fun for featuring some of the deep, resonant moments of Vulnicura.

-I got the cellist's set list-- the one who plays the solo on Family. It is now hanging happily in my bedroom. I also purchased the Triumph of a Heart coffee mug and the postcard set.

Mug is at MoMA, yes, but it is not dishwasher safe! I wanted it, but that's why I didn't buy it. Also it is $15.
