:/

have you tried to use a different cable ? It's very unlikely that the files are gone, it doesn't disappear like that, also have you tried on another computer ? I'm pretty sure you can solve the issue and get everything back :logo:

Yes, I tried connecting to another computer and even bought a similar new cable, but no luck so far. It just keeps blinking. I have to find someone that can fix it for me, but hearing you and Odduck say the files don't disappear just like that at least gives me hope. Thanks!

Thanks Pat! I hope I can just view it all again on my big screen.

Don't keep connecting it though, let it rest until the repairperson is there.

Wow sending love and warmthness. A few years ago my old laptop died on me and I lost a huge music collection from many different artists. I managed to get a lot back, freebies, CDs, all that stuff, but still missing some rarities and stuff no longer availble. Computer stuff is always really frustrating but if nothing's damaged you should be able to get everything back :)

This sounds like the worst case scenario any fan could experience. i feel sorry for you and the situation you're in.

what i know for sure (as others have mentioned, too) is that the files are still there even if you accidentally deleted the files, because deleting only deletes the index references as long as you didn't fill the hdd with new stuff after deleting the files.

given the fact that you even didn't delete them, they must be on there. The repair person can most probably re-establish all of your files. i guess it's a matter of competence and cost.

good luck magnetar!

ps. don't blame yourself. maybe it would have crashed the moment you wanted to copy the contents of the old hdd to the new one, even if you had done that right after receiving the new hdd...

I won't. I disconnected it. I've just been staring at it all week.

Thank you Anak and Dubstar! And thank you all for the heart-warming messages I received on and off the 4um. I can't tell you how much it means to me.

I read this article last week from an American music journalist who lost his whole physical collection of thousands of vinyls and CDs during a move and he said something that really hit home:

"every record and CD has a complicated network of memories and associations attached to it. Losing as many items as I did feels like having several key scenes excised from my autobiography."

full article

I never expected losing my digital collection would have such an impact on me mentally and physically, but since everyone is telling me the files should still be on it and can most likely be retrieved, it gives me hope. I just have to be patient and look for the right person for the job.

Thanks again guys, I won't forget this.

To be continued!

fingers are crossed that you get your music collection back!

i feel you. recently i deleted an important folder by mistake. a lot of important, personal digital files (e.g. novellas written by myself, dream diaries, doc copies etc) are gone. deleted it from trash bin too. i know someone can retrieve it somehow, but i can´t. :shifty: :dizzy:

I had a backup externa drive that did the same: It blinked, but it wouldn't connect.
My bf had the idea that the drive was fine, just the interface that was not working. So he connected it in his desktop computer and he could just access it fine.

So perhaps an IT person can do something similar, to see if that works?

It is now his extra internal drive. I always make sure that I back up everything on two devices, just in case.

That's the first thing I'm going to do if I get everything back.

magnetar, how it´s going for you?

Not feeling great, so I gave myself a project to keep busy. I cleaned out and reorganized my storage room downstairs and later this week I'm going to repaint the living room, while I keep looking for that IT person. I hope you'll find one as well.

is it difficult to find someone because it's very expensive? i did a search for hard disk data recovery netherlands and there are plenty of companies who do it...
